Your Words Weighed in Gold

Your words were-
Beautiful
Glorious
Eternal
Powerful
Your words were golden.

Wore them everywhere,
With pride and confidence,
Knowing every word was weighed in gold.

I wore them, around my mind,
I wore your words around my heart
And my hands
My feet too,
I wore your words around my neck
A chain of gold, to behold.

Eager, like a child, to show the world
How valuable they were.
They molded and shaped me into a precious jewel.

I stood at the town square,
Grinning and basking
In the admiration of townsfolk
I was the golden child.

Like a python around my neck,
Subtly, your words grew tighter and tighter
They circled and circled and did not stop
I tried to break free to no avail
I choked, I screamed and clutched your words
But alas!
I was bound by you.

And so were my hands
My feet
And mind.

How could this be?
For your words had liberated me before
When did this dance shift?
When did I become the prey?

It is then I realized
Your words were a golden calf,
Idolized,elevated, to the mountaintop.
I lay prostrate and worshipped the calf
All it did,
Was snatch away my worth and strength.

I swung my hammer
And felled you with a singular blow.
Sharp,
Sudden,
Strong,
You were heavy in gold.

I chose then to anchor you in my heart,
I choose now to uproot you from my being
And when I looked at you once more,
You ceased to behold,
And held me hostage no more.

I chose to take back my power from you.
